The reception area is where the two diverse worlds- the contemporary and the traditional come alive in their own essence.
The highlight of the space is the bridge. It is a masterpiece with its railings designed with old city Lucknow- inspired art- almost a walk through the past!
Beautiful stories of design hidden behind the neglect opened our thinking about the architecture and design of building elements from the past which could be reinterpreted in the modern idiom.
The bridge within the reception volume is one such reference from the past that has been included in the building design in the truest form. Inspired by the articulation of Old City Lucknow, this element of design lends itself fully as a reminder of the glorious past.
Shaping Bricks , stepping out of the boundaries
The streets of inner city Lucknow had many hidden gems of innovative design thinking which formed the basis of design ideas. Elements of hand crafting which often fall out of the boundaries of the material as we know it, were a source of great inspiration and adapting these simplest yet unique ways of seeing this humble earth material which has been a building block since the earliest Indus valley civilization. The brick used for crafting was a regularly available building material and that was the challenge and the success of this innovation, seen in many scales and in different locations.
The use of brick and earth materials has long been a part of the traditional way of making buildings in Lucknow which got its name from the “lakhori bricks”. This element of material sensitivity became an essential part of our design language for The Centrum. The inclusion of this material, however, took a completely different form as reinterpretation and innovation became the tools for design.
Openings and windows articulation of Spatiality of open courts at every level
Breaking surfaces to create shadows and cooler facades was a tool of design for the entire building. The elements are traditional but with a modern interpretation.
The articulation of transition spaces can be seen as a traditional treatment. The introduction of this in the Banquet halls was an additional which is unconventional for this topology. However, the element lends a very usable space in the climatic conditions of India.
